Tiffany Lamps Galore FAQs

Q: What is the difference between a flush mount and semi-flush mount light?
A: Semi flush fixtures:
  • There is a gap, at least 3 inches, between the fixture and the ceiling.
  • Able to reach the bulb sockets without taking the fixture apart.
Flush Mount Fixtures:
  • Either no gap or less than 3 inches between the fixture and the ceiling.
  • Requires removing the bowl to access the bulb sockets.
  • Usually by unscrewing the center bolt.

In general, semi flush lighting fixtures are able to handle higher bulb wattages. The space between the bowl and the ceiling allows the heat to release. Flush mount lighting fixtures use lower bulb wattages because there is no space for the heat to exit. Flush mount are preferred on lower ceilings. While Semi flush lights are ideal on medium to high ceilings. These fixtures are also great in hallways as a substitute for recessed lighting. In hallways, light fixtures should be used every 8 to 10 feet to ensure a full range of coverage.

Q: What is the correct hanging height for an island lights?
A: In most homes we recommend that lighting fixtures positioned over tables to hang 60" - 72" from the fixture to the floor. For kitchen islands 70" - 76" from the floor will provide good light on your workspace without hanging too low.

Q: What about pool table or billiard lights hanging height?
A: Same general rule of thumb - 60" - 72" from the floor. The bottom of the light should be approx. 31 - 34" above the playing table surface to disperse even light and avoid shadows around the pockets.

Q: What size pool table light do I need for my table?
A: Shop for the lights by the overall width:

  • Under 40 inches = 7 ft. table
  • 40 - 50 inches = 8 ft. table
  • 50 - 60 inches = 9 ft. table
  • 60 inches and up = 10 ft. table

The lights that are under 40 inches in overall width are primarily suited for the playing surface of a small pool table - 7 ft.

Lights that are 40 - 60 inches in overall width can work on both an 8 ft. and 9 ft. pool table.

The lights that are 60 inches in overall width and up are best suited for the 10 ft. pool table. You could use a light that would perhaps be 50 inches in width but you may find shadows to be cast in the corners.

Q: What does UL stand for?
A: Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., like Electrical Testing Laboratory (ETL), is an independent, not-for-profit product safety testing and certification organization.

Q: What's the right size chandelier and how hard is it to hang?
A: A chandelier is often the focal point of the dining room. As such it should be hung about 30 inches above the tabletop and should be at least 6 - 12 inches narrower than the table on each side.

So with an 8 foot ceiling height - hang a chandelier approximately 30 to 34 inches over a table If your ceiling is higher than 8 feet, mount the chandelier an additional 3 inches higher for each foot of ceiling.

Consider the weight difference:

But because chandeliers are heavy fixtures, it's often necessary to replace a standard electrical box in the ceiling, which has a maximum load rating of 50 pounds, with a support system that can hold the added weight.

The chandelier would otherwise be the same installation as any other ceiling light (with decorative canopy covering or ceiling plate) to finish. If the customer is ordering a very heavy or large chandelier, they may want to have a professional install the piece.

Care and maintenance:

  • Before cleaning any lamp shade or fixture, disconnect the power source (unplug from outlets).
  • To clean Tiffany products made of opaque stained glass, art glass or jadestone, as well as most metal lamp bases and fixture frames, apply a lemon oil-based furniture polish to a soft cloth, and wipe gently.
  • To clean shades made of mica or fabric, wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth or a feather duster.
  • To clean Tiffany products made of beveled or transparent glass, apply a household glass cleaner to a soft cloth, and wipe gently.
  • For fixtures hanging near cooking areas in kitchens, that may have heavy layers of greasy buildup or dirt, Mr. Clean works best for cleaning. Apply the cleaner to a soft cloth, and wipe gently. After cleaning, reapply lemon-oil based furniture polish to the shade, for best results.
